This session will provide an opportunity to get to know other course participants, explore the pillars of stronger foundation practice, and outline the legal context for trustees.

Connecting your mission to your investments, and considering time-horizon
30 September, 2.30pm – 4.30pm

Stronger Foundation Pillar: A stronger foundation prioritises its mission when setting its investment objectives, and reviews its own time-horizon.

Building on the first session, we will examine the role of mission and values in driving investment strategy. Additionally, we will explore the question of time-horizons and deciding what to spend.

Getting your governance right / Managing your managers
6 October, 10am – 12pm

Stronger Foundation Pillar: A stronger foundation engages with and holds to account those manging its investments.

A practical examination of foundation governance, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. We will also introduce the topic of holding your managers to account, the tricky questions that you should be asking.

This session equips trustees to put their investment strategy into practice, examining how financial policy feeds into the objectives of your investment policy, the relationship between risk and return, the characteristics of different asset classes and the purpose of diversification.

Extreme weather and open conversations
8 October, 2.30pm – 4.30pm

Stronger Foundation Pillar: A stronger foundation actively seeks a variety of research and views to informs its approach to investments

In the final session we will examine what can happen in times of extreme economic and financial stress and how markets can behave. We will also discuss the range of investment approaches and styles, and how endowment size and capacity may impact your choices.

Technical information

These seminars will be run via zoom meetings. Once registered, delegates will receive calendar invites which include the access links, and relevant reading material. Delegates will also be provided with a technical briefing note ahead of the first session.

For the best experience we recommend that delegates join via a computer with access to a camera and a microphone.
