We’re a UK registered grant-making foundation which funds outstanding charities to deliver projects tackling hunger around the world. We’re funded by innocent drinks, who have always donated 10% of profits to charity. Over the last 15 years, we’ve given nearly £6m to help more than 820,000 hungry people and learnt a lot about how to make the biggest possible impact with our donations. We’ve now grown to an annual income of £1m which supports a portfolio of 12 partners globally. Our work is split into two goals. Our first goal is to stop children dying from hunger, which we do by funding cutting edge research around the world and as a member of the global coalition www.nowastedlives.org. Our second goal is to help the poorest families feed themselves, which we do by finding and funding visionary people to test smart ideas with breakthrough potential.
As part of our trustee board, your job is to provide strategic oversight of the foundation. You’ll work as part of a team of seven trustees who meet quarterly to consider, debate and approve all major decisions. As a recognised independent and strategic thinker, you will bring credibility and stature, adding value to an already high-performing board through your knowledge and networks. You will bring deep experience of working on acute malnutrition in the developing world, and may also have experience of food security and climate change resilience interventions, grant making or leadership of a sizeable not-for-profit organisation. Between meetings, you’ll provide support and advice for our foundation staff, Kate and Amy. You will occasionally be invited to represent the foundation at external events, or to visit foundation projects in the developing world.
Our board is currently made up of six trustees. Richard, Adam and Jon founded innocent back in 1999 and their commitment to the foundation remains as strong as ever, although they are no longer involved in running the business. Douglas is CEO of innocent and sees his role as a trustee as crucial to proving that the business can be a force for good. SJ is our employee trustee (her day job is People Director at innocent) and our newest member. Christina was our first external trustee and shares her years of experience in the development sector. You would be our second external trustee, representing the development sector.
Trustees in the UK are unpaid, but expenses to attend meetings or visit projects will be covered. All trustees are appointed for a two year term, with the option for reappointment. You will be able to attend four daytime meetings in London each year (ideally in person, although video conferencing will be an option for some meetings), and also consider additional travel to visit projects and attend events or training. We welcome applications from people based outside the UK, as long as you speak great English and can make it to the trustee meetings.
What are we looking for in a candidate?
You will definitely be:
- passionate about helping the world’s hungry
- very experienced within the acute malnutrition sector in the developing world
- a creative and analytical thinker who can explore the complex decisions needed to develop our strategy, with a pragmatic approach to implementation
- a strong team player, prepared to speak your mind at board level and influence others to make change happen
- a great communicator who can be a credible, authentic and inspiring ambassador for the foundation
- willing to travel to London for four meetings a year and occasionally represent the foundation at external events
- clear on the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee. Read about that here.
You might also have:
- experience of food security and climate change resilience development work
- experience of grant making or leadership of a sizable not-for-profit organisation
- time to visit foundation projects in the developing world and occasionally represent the foundation at external events
- knowledge of charity governance requirements
- financial management experience
