Funder briefing on Human Rights Act

ACF’s Members Policy Forum and Ariadne invite funders to a briefing on the reform of the UK Human Rights Act.

In December, the UK Ministry of Justice opened a consultation on the Human Rights Act, which will remain open for responses until 8 March 2022. In its announcement, the government has made clear its intention to repeal the Human Rights Act and replace it with a Bill of Rights, expected to be narrower and more restricted in scope. According to the consultation announcement, ‘The Bill of Rights will protect essential rights, like the right to a fair trial and the right to life, which are a fundamental part of a modern democratic society. But we will reverse the mission creep that has meant human rights law being used for more and more purposes, and often with little regard for the rights of wider society.’ This reform threatens the protection of human rights across the UK and could put vulnerable groups such as refugees and asylum seekers at risk.

At this briefing specifically for funders, human rights experts will share their analysis of the reform process, and we will discuss the potential role that funders could play in responding to this threat to human rights in the UK. Speakers include:

• Sanchita Hosali, Director, British Institute of Human Rights
• Martha Spurrier, Director, Liberty
• Martin O’Brien, Director, Social Change Initiative

The discussion will be moderated by David Sampson, Deputy Director, Baring Foundation.

This event will be held online. A Zoom link will be sent 48 hours before.

Time:
1.00pm - 2.00pm
