The City Bridge Trust is reviewing its grant making priorities to help make sure they meet the changing needs of Londoners over the next five years. The Trust has already conducted a review of its current grants programme and commissioned research on the trends affecting London. Informed by these findings, now it wants to test out its ideas with voluntary and community organisations to help it focus its resources to have the greatest impact on disadvantage in London. In the final year of The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund (‘the Fund’) a project was undertaken to donate the Fund’s files into an accessible archive at the British Library.
The project involved identifying all existing records held by the Fund, deciding which should be included in the archive, reviewing these files in order to recommend closure periods for sensitive files, and transferring the files to the British Library.
The Fund’s archive is an enormously rich and varied resource, documenting both the history of the Fund and the activities of the organisations supported by the Fund. The archive allows unique insights into the ways in which non-profit organisations have contributed to social change over the past 15 years.

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has recently announced £3.14 million in legacy grants awarded to 44 of the Fund’s long-term partners to further the strategic objectives pursued by the Fund during its closing years.
The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry set to become the legal owner of the Fund after its operations have ceased to safeguard both the Fund’s name and any income donated to the Fund in the future.

According to new research carried by Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF) and Schroders Charities, 85% of charitable trusts have either maintained or increased their expenditure rates since the onset of the economic crisis in 2008.
The research, will form part of a report due to be published by ACF later in the winter focused on the key questions facing charities who rely on investment returns to fund their activities in the long term.

As part of the 'mustard seed awards' the Christian Initiative Trust have released over £50,000 in prizes which will be presented to winners of the competition which called for Christian or church-based organisations to come forward with their ideas for community initiatives which would touch and transform lives.

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland has won a major award for its support for 34 social enterprises over the past three years.
The Foundation was named Supporter of the Year at the Northern Ireland Social Enterprise Awards at a special reception in Belfast Castle in recognition of its commitment to the sector, allocating a total of £102,000 to support local enterprises.

On 26 October, the Wembley National Stadium Trust has launched to the public and issued its first major call for applications to fund sports projects in LB Brent.
The Trust is funded by a 1% precept on the annual turnover of Wembley Stadium – part of a legal arrangement that secured lottery funding towards the building the new stadium. The expectation is that the trust’s annual income should be around £1m per annum. In this first grants round the trust will be looking to make awards totalling up to around £300k to clubs and organisations either based in LB Brent or already delivering services there.

The Rochester Bridge Trust is distributing around £25,000 in community grants to inspire young Kent engineers and scientists, and repair significant features in some of the county’s most historic buildings.
The Trust’s community grant awards for 2012-13, announced by Bridge Clerk Sue Threader, also include grants worth more than £9,000 towards the costs of conserving valued features in key historic buildings.
The Trust plans to offer a new grant programme in Spring 2013 and further details will be available on its website in the New Year.

LankellyChase Foundation has today launched a new grants programme, the ‘Promoting Change Network’.
LankellyChase Foundation wants to build a growing network of funded organisations which are working to transform the lives of people who face severe and multiple disadvantage. In this first grant round, we are looking to fund 15-20 organisations. We want funded organisations to exchange ideas and learning, and to collaborate in building momentum behind the case for change.

Recently launched, the Christian Initiative Awards is a competition to find innovative Christians with ideas that have the potential to transform communities and make a real difference.
The Awards, run jointly by Premier Christian Media (PCM) and the Christian Initiative Trust (CIT), offer up to £50,000 of investment to the winners of the nation-wide competition. The top, Gold award is worth £12,000 with the winners of the Silver and Bronze benefitting from £10,000 and £8,000 respectively.

In the middle of July a group of about 100 made up of young refugees, designers, tech developers, funders, activists, writers, musicians, lawyers, youth workers and a whole host of others spent a weekend locked in the Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s new Leeke Street offices working out ways that digital technology could help young people with irregular immigration status get more of the support they need.

These activities previously ineligible under Awards for All will be accepted on application forms from 1 June 2012 for a 6 month period, giving small organisations a welcome chance to secure funding for activities benefiting local communities.

NPC have recently released a report that looks at the benefits of trusteeship beyond those of being a way of contributing to the charitable sector. The report explores the value of trusteeship through the eyes of individuals and charities, and provides practical guidance on finding suitable trustee positions. Also discussed is the perspective of employers and professional bodies, which stand to benefit from trusteeship.

Nominet Trust, the social investor that champions innovative and positive approaches to using digital technology to tackle major social challenges has announced the results of a new funding round, totalling in excess of £2million.
The investment, which will be distributed across 13 projects and a number of partnerships, is the largest single funding round the organisation has made to date – a testament to its commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged, vulnerable people through digital solutions.

UnLtd has launched the fourth paper in its Finding Series, which focuses on their learning from social entrepreneurs aged 50 and over. Having worked with nearly a 1,000 social entrepreneurs over 50, UnLtd have found a wealth of untapped potential offered by this age group.
Findings show the personal benefit experienced by the social entrepreneurs themselves, as well as the social and economic impact their ventures create.

A new centre dedicated to the understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases will be established at UCL following the award of a £20million grant from the Wolfson Foundation, it was announced today.
The grant is the largest single award ever made by the Foundation and one of the largest philanthropic donations in UCL’s history. It is made as a result of the Wolfson Neurology Initiative, designed as a legacy to Lord Wolfson of Marylebone, who died in 2010.

The Big Lottery Fund has issued the first of its grants from the £50m Supporting Change & Impact fund, designed to prepare charities for future sustainability in the wake of a tough funding climate.
Some 93 grants of up to £10,000 have been awarded to projects already receiving BIG funding in England. The initiative, which was launched in October last year, will allow projects in the last 18 months of their funding time to develop and review their schemes for future sustainability.

The Panel on the Independence of the Voluntary Sector chaired by Dame Anne Owers and established by the Baring Foundation in June 2011 has published the first of what will be five annual assessments on sector independence.

The Forum has published a new report

The handbook has been developed from a piece of work that was undertaken between 2008 and the end of last year by the Carnegie UK Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, exploring the link between analysing power and achieving social change.

Each session will have a maximum of 20 participants and take place at Pinners Hall, will start mid-morning and run over lunch, which will be provided.

The Growing Scientist project is being sponsored by the Rochester Bridge Trust and aims to engage up to 1,000 pupils a year in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its longer term objective is to encourage further study and future careers in these subjects.
The £60,000 grant from the Rochester Bridge Trust will fund a programme of events during 2011 and 2012, starting with a Space Day this autumn when the students will be designing and firing rockets as well as talking via a video link with people who can tell them from first hand experience about the challenges of living in space. The schools will also be teaming up with each other to develop their own projects.

In April 2011, the Barrow Cadbury Trust launched a new website. The site includes information about each of their programmes: Criminal Justice, Migration and Europe, and Poverty and Inclusion. The majority of investors in the first-ever social impact bond launched by the UK government were foundations and charities, according to an early report into the success of the payment-by-results pilot. The social impact bond (SIB) model attracts funding from private investors to pay for interventions to improve outcomes on a payment-by-results basis.
HMP Peterborough, as host of the first of six planned SIB contracts aimed at reducing re-offending announced in December’s Green Paper, Breaking the Cycle, attracted funding from more than ten charitable trusts including ACF members Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Barrow Cadbury Trust, Henry Smith Foundation, Lankelly Chase Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Tudor Trust.

The Rochester Bridge Trust is sponsoring an innovative two-year programme to bring a wide range of young musicians, including DJs and MCs, together. There will be free music workshops and two concerts each year, all with music inspired by the River Medway.
Kent Music, a music education charity, will be leading the programme, and will be working in partnership with Rhythmix, a charity specialising in youth music initiatives. They aim to work with young musicians in the Maidstone, Tonbridge and Medway area.

October 2010 saw the UK’s first ever national Trustees’ Week. Its aim was to promote trusteeship and encourage more people to consider taking up the role. With the Big Society agenda also calling for more of us to get involved in our local communities, trusteeship has become a hot topic.
NPC ran a series of trustee seminars in May, June and July 2010, funded by The Clothworkers’ Company. Over 80 charity trustees came together to debate how they could make their charities more effective and to share ideas about improving trusteeship.

The Big Lottery Fund has today allocated £200,000 to the Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) to create a one-stop knowledge resource that will be available to the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.
Birmingham University-based TSRC will collaborate with the British Library in establishing a “Knowledge Portal”, an on-line catalogue and library of published material on and for the VCS in the UK that will become a permanent part of the British Library’s Social Sciences collection.

The funding is open to registered charities, working alongside statutory services and the Foundation is specifically interested in applications that:
- are new or innovative and pushes existing ‘boundaries’
- will extend or replicate an existing and proven model of working
- will improve joined-up working with statutory agencies to deliver better services.

Tenders are invited for an independent evaluation of the work of The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund is an independent grant-giving charity established in September 1997 to continue the Princess’ humanitarian work in the UK and overseas.
The Fund is currently spending out its capital and will close at the end of 2012. The evaluation will seek to investigate how effectively the Fund has used its assets – both financial and non-financial – to campaign for social change in its areas of focus, primarily since the launch of its Strategic Plan in 2007.

White Stuff has committed to giving at least 1% of its annual profits for 2010-11 to the Foundation and, as such, provides its principal source of income. Each White Stuff shop supports a local charity and raises funds through fun customer activities and events, as well as creative window schemes. For instance in Autumn 2009, a nationwide window campaign ‘Give a Gnome a Home’ saw thousands of customers adopt a gnome and the scheme raised over £30,000 for local charities. Plus, the company will support the Foundation with the profits from sales of fun items in its shops.

The Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales today published its annual report announcing £20.6 million had been invested in tackling disadvantage in 2009.
One of the UK’s leading grant makers, the independently run Foundation supports charities that help disadvantaged people play a fuller role in the community. During 2009, the Foundation funded over 900 small to medium sized charities tackling nationwide-wide issues through local community work. Over 1,800 jobs and 6,900 volunteering opportunities (often leading to employment) have been supported in the last three years throughout England and Wales.

The term “charity” can be traced back to biblical times, and was first formalised in English law in 1601 – so what does it mean in practice in 2008 – both in law and in spirit? The Charities Act 2006 – most of which comes into force in 2008 – has led to the first statutory redefinition of “charity” for over 400 years, and has fundamentally updated structures and regulatory frameworks.
