Visit to Anawim
- Max Rutherford, Barrow Cadbury Trust
- Leticia Thomas, Bell Foundation
This will be an opportunity to visit one of the UK’s most pioneering and successful community women’s centres – Anawim – in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Anawim supports women with multiple and complex needs, and specialises in trauma-informed, gender-specific interventions that help women navigate through systems and move forward in their lives. Last year, Anawim opened its first on-site residential unit, which will be subject to a longitudinal evaluation by the University of Birmingham.
Anawim is a member of Clinks and Women’s Breakout, and has a strong national reputation – its CEO Joy Doal MBE is a regular contributor at conferences, Select Committees and APPGs. She has been an outspoken critic of the impact of Transforming Rehabilitation on women’s centres, an issue that many charitable trusts and foundations are concerned about.
At this meeting we will meet staff and women using the services, as well as academics involved in evaluating the residential unit. It will take place at 228 Mary Street, Balsall Heath, Birmingham, B12 9RJ. Arrivals are from 11.30am, with a tour from 12pm-1pm. A networking lunch with staff and women using the service will be from 1pm-2pm, with taxis back to Birmingham New Street at 2.30pm.
